CAMS Musician in Residence

The CAMS Musician in residence position was inaugurated in June 2024. The position is in line with the center's commitment to feature fundamental mathematics in dialog with artistic endeavors, music first and foremost.

Mr. Khaled Yassine is the first musician appointed to the position with "The Art and Science of Percussion" being the guiding thread of this cycle's math-music program. Under this theme, Mr. Yassine will explore the mutually productive interplay between mathematics, mathematical modeling, musical instruments and the music produced with them over a year.

Complementary Interests

  • Visiting/revisiting of standard approaches in creating musical instruments, then room for exploration in their design, drawing on experiments in neighboring tradition (the Indian first and foremost);

  • The potential of tuning [read "tempering"] of percussion instruments in dialog with composition and performance in the Arabic Maqam tradition, culture, and the role of mathematical modeling in support of those explorations;

  • Signal processing and electronics in support of percussion specific technologies, machine learning for pattern recognitions then algorithmic composition;

  • The implication of the artist's coupling intensively to our academic environment for musical composition in dialog with the mathematical sciences on one hand, then musical instruction on the other;

  • Musical inspiration, composition, performance in dialogue with the mathematical sciences at AUB: this is the typical framework for embedding and dynamics of musicians within a mathematical environment.

The collaboration will unfold in the context of a natural dialog between three AUB entities [the Zaki Nassif Music Program, the Music Laboratory at MSFEA and CAMS] and the faculty members guiding them [Nabil Nassif, Joseph Bakarji and Jihad Touma]. This synergy was further extended to engage the FAS, with the prospect of coupling your association with CAMS to an FAS practitioner in residence arrangement in due course.
