Environment and Sustainable Development Unit
  • The Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) embodies AUB’s long-standing commitment to community-centered development, bridging academic rigor with field-based action for over 25 years. The Unit drives impact in agroecology, rural development, food systems, and climate adaptation, while supporting nationally and regionally recognized master’s programs. Guided by the motto “Keepers of the Land,” ESDU advances sustainable, resilient, and dignified livelihoods across Lebanon and the region. With a proven track record of mobilizing knowledge, empowering communities, and leading regional initiatives, ESDU also serves as the outreach arm of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS), engaging the public through spaces such as the Urban Oasis and contributing to meaningful, long-term institutional and regional change.

ESDU has launched national initiatives that evolved into independently recognized organizations, such as the Food Heritage Foundation and Ardi Ardak. It also leads regional initiatives such as Dawwera and Ithmar.

"We at ESDU put people and their livelihoods at the center of development. They are the keepers of the land. Community-based action oriented research should be embedded into any development".

    Shady Hamadeh, ESDU Director.
