LDEM Launches Land Food Initiative to Support Vulnerable Communities in Times of Crisis

The Land Food Project is an initiative launched by the members of the Department of Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management (LDEM) and of the Food Security Program (FSP) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) to support and assist vulnerable communities in times of crisis by improving food security, mental wellbeing, and social cohesion with minimal impact on the environment.

The overall aim of the project is to develop bottom-up small-scale projects at the community level with direct benefits to members of the local community.

The mission of the project to ensure the short and long-term recovery of communities in crisis is sustainable and addressed through a holistic approach that simultaneously includes food, shelter, mental and social health, and the environment.

In its first phase, Land-Food Relief Project is collaborating with the very active NGO, OFFRE JOIE (https://offrejoie.org/), in the Karantina neighborhood in close proximity to the location of the explosion, to guide the development and implementation of a community kitchen and a community garden. The collective team underwent multiple productive meetings and site visits for the past month.
