Under the supervision of Karim Bacha (Lecturer) and Nadine El-Khayat (Part-time lecturer), LDEM students across all years collectively participated to an international competition, “The Three Squares of Batroun". The competition, organized by CtrlActDesign, aims at revitalizing three public squares along with their pedestrian connection at the heart of the old city of Batroun. As part of the design process, an internal charrette was organized within the department, taking place over three days. The students first visited the site, guided by Mr. Remi Feghali, a local architect and business owner. They were exposed to its waterfront landscape, as well as its distinct architectural and rich cultural heritage. Seven groups of students were formed, working tirelessly over two days to deliver seven distinct conceptual approaches.
A jury composed of Mr. Edgar Mrad (Khatib &Alami, Associate), Mr. Remi Feghali (architect) and Mr. Wissam Melhem (landscape planner) then selected two winning projects to represent the department as official entries. The awarded projects were “A dialogue with the neighborhood" (Lana El Kaissi, Lama Ghoussainy, Vartkes Khasholian, Ghaydaa Rammal) and “A lighter vision" (Aya Faiad, Sasha Khalil, Maya Risha). The jury also awarded honorable mentions to two other groups.
Students enrolled on a voluntary basis to develop further the selected conceptual ideas. Official competition submissions will take place on November 1 and the results will be announced on November 12.
