Nutrition and Dietetics Student Lara Chaaban announced as the MRVP award winner

The Medial Research Volunteer Program (MRVP) committee announced Ms. Lara Chaaban (Nutrition & Dietetics) as the 2018 winner of the ‘Ibrahim and Loulu Durr Endowed Medical Research Volunteer Program (MRVP) Award.’ Ms. Chaaban was recognized for her outstanding medical research capabilities, dedication, passion, accomplishments and achievements.

She assisted a Master’s student’s project entitled “Endothelial Dysfunction as a result of Hypercaloric Intake: Underlying Mechanism in the Absence of Hyperglycemia” that tackled endothelial dysfunction in the prediabetic state and its underlying mechanism. She used a Myobath Tissue System that involved the use of rat aortas and different compounds that would contract and relax the aortas in different pathways. The tension in the aortas were measured and a comparison between the control rats (normal) and the rats placed under a high-fat diet (induced prediabetes) was established to analyze and infer the underlying mechanism.

This biennial award was given to Ms. Chaaban and another student, both enrolled in the MRVP, during the “Fifth Annual Clinical Research Open House (CRI)” where they had the opportunity to showcase their work in the medical research field.

Dr. Bilal Kaafarani and Dr. Ammar Olabi presented Ms. Chaaban with the award during the CRI Open House Event that took place at AUBMC’s “Halim and Aida Daniel Academic and Clinical Center” on May 4, 2018.
