FAFS, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Health Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) and the Nature Conservation Center (NCC), is developing a university-wide initiative: Reducing Plastic on Campus. Committee members met to discuss next steps of the initiative on November 8. EHSRM and NCC will develop a legacy proposal to present to the BOD (similar to the one developed for AUB Tobacco Free Campaign).
The goal is to reduce (not eliminate) plastic use on campus. Suggestions discussed included: collaboration with the private sector, particularly the water industries, rural communities, and the Faculty of Medicine, AUB to develop alternatives to plastic and to raise awareness regarding the health issues to be addressed by the initiative. The committee aims to launch its campaign in Fall 2019.
At that time, recyclable and reusable bottles will be distributed on campus. The committee includes representatives from FAFS, the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA), EHSRM, NCC, the Facilities Planning and Design Unit (FPDU), the Office of Communications, the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business (OSB), and the Office of the Provost.
