The Department Nutrition of and Food Sciences at FAFS, AUB, the Wellness Program at AUBMC, and the National Diabetes Organization DiaLeb, co-organized a Diabetes Awareness Campaign, to commemorate World Diabetes Day, November 14, 2018. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a highly manageable, non-communicable disease (NCD) that affects 12.6 % of the Lebanese Population (WHO, 2016), a number in excess of the global DM occurrence, 8.4 %. Since nutrition is a major part of the prevention, management, and treatment of DM, FAFS wanted to help raise awareness about the disease, and did so by offering 500 Blood Glucose tests and 50 HbA1c tests, diabetes educational material, and diabetic-friendly sweet and salty snacks in 3 locations around campus: the FAFS courtyard, West Hall, and Sawwaf Medical Center. Twenty glucose testing machines (glycosometer) were distributed to AUB staff and students whose blood glucose tested high or those previously diagnosed as pre-diabetic or diabetic. The event was covered by MTV-Lebanon, who played a short documentary during the evening news.
