AREC Students Assist in the Birth of Two Calves

Excited AREC students assisted the experienced herdsmen at AREC in delivering two female calves.  In one case, students used calving rope to assist with pulling the calf from the heifer's womb, tying the calf's two front legs and pulling it outward and downward with the mother's contractions and pushing.

The opportunity was the first time for all of them to witness the start of a new life. The heifers were purchased from Liban Lait last month and monitored by AREC experienced herdsmen, who also kept a professional, supportive eye on the volunteer students.
