The Landscape Architecture Student Society (LASS) launched the first edition of Community Park Day, organized by the society’s cabinet Hana Ismail, Rania Bou Said and Sara El Samman (LDEM) on June 29, in Basta, Hawd El Weleye Public Park. The eventful day aimed to highlight the importance and use of public spaces in Lebanon by familiarizing people with Hawd El Wileye Park.

The day’s activities allowed visitors to experience the park’s full potential, and included yoga, meditation, kid’s entertainment, puppet shows, art exhibitions, musical performances and food shacks. The diversity of attendees was key to the success of the event, which brought together people from multiple social classes, nationalities, genders, and of varying physical abilities. The audience included families from Basta and youth from AUB and greater Beirut.
Sponsored by Bankmed, FAFS and LDEM, Maliks for Printing, and Beirut Municipality (which offered logistical support), the event offered a lineup of performers, fun activities, and facts to raise awareness of public parks in Beirut.
The organizing team thanks all the volunteers who held activities: Dana Abu Zaki (yoga), Joe Kettaneh (Meditation), Urban Sketchers Lebanon, AlSabeel (Storytelling), Maroun El Hourani, Sauron’s Ring, Sou, Rawan Itani, Saxitoxin AUB, and Teyyarit Waraq (Musical Performances), and the other organizers Takatta (Kid’s Entertainment) and Zicco House (Materials and Logitics). LASS is grateful for the work of its LDEM organizing team members: Farah Boughanem, Sirene Abiad, Ibrahim Dhaini and Luna Mansour.
