Farmers will irrigate crops from their smart-phones

Dr. Hadi Jaafar was recently awarded a fund for the research project Integrating time series ET mapping into an operational irrigation management framework (ITSET). The project was one of four selected in the region from more than 60 submitted proposals to be funded. The proposal underwent a thorough review and evaluation process before being funded by the DUPC2 Program of the IHE-Delft Water Institute from the Netherlands Government.

Jaafar's project aims at developing a real-time remotely sensed and validated high resolution evapotranspiration (i.e. crop water use) product for Lebanon by fusing satellite imagery from different sources and automating the product generation.

The second stage of the project includes prototyping a smart-mobile application that enables farmers to irrigate their crops on an as-need basis by linking the app to the ET product developed in the first stage. Inception and training workshops for farmers and other stakeholders in Lebanon will take place during the two-year project span. Read more about Jaafar's research here.
