Launch of the EAT-Lancet commission on healthy diets from sustainable food systems: Food in the Anthropocene

​The FAFS Food Security Program hosted (April 15) the launch of the EAT-Lancet commission on healthy diets from sustainable food systems: Food in the Anthropocene as part of the FAFS Seminar Series. One of a series of over 30 launches held in major cities around the globe and including Oslo, Paris, London, Rome, New York, Mexico City, Addis Ababa, Melbourne, and Jakarta, the Beirut launch event a collaborative event with the EAT-forum and the EAT-Lancet commission.

The Commission delivered the first full scientific review of what constitutes a healthy diet from the perspective of a sustainable food system, and which actions can support and speed up food system transformation. The event drew over one hundred attendees, including faculty, students, alumni, and external guests. The audience included private sector, civil society organizations (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA), Arab Network for Food Sovereignty (APN), Nature Middle East, and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), and universities (Lebanese University, University of South Carolina, Kassel University). 

Speakers  joined for a panel discussion that included Louise Sarant, moderator and journalist Nature Middle East; Mahmoud El Solh, former general director, ICARDA, Lebanon; Roula Majdalani, director, ESCWA Sustainable Development Policies Division; Mario Massoud, CEO, Biomass Lebanon; Nahla Hwalla, professor, NFSC, FAFS; James Hébert, distinguished professor of epidemiology and director of Cancer Prevention and Control Program, U South Carolina;  Hasan Aljaajaa, co-founder, Arab Network for Food Sovereignty (APN).
