Toward Enhancement of the Mediterranean Diet in Lebanon: A Call for Action workshop

​​The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN) organized the national workshop “Toward the Enhancement of the Mediterranean Diet in the Mediterranean Region", at the Mövenpick Hotel & Resort, Beirut, on February 27, 2019.  The workshop was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Industry, FAO, and the private sector.

Dean Mohtar welcomed attendees and highlighted the importance of promoting the healthy and sustainable Mediterranean Diet (MD). Following the Dean's remarks, the assembly heard from:

  • Mr. Emanuele D'Andrassi, representing the Embassy of Italy in Lebanon

  • Dr. Maurice Saade, representing FAO-UN, Lebanon

  • Mrs. Wafaa Dika Hamze, former Minister, current Senior Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, Lebanon.

NFSC faculty members and associate professors Lara Nasreddine and Farah Naja presented in the panel discussion Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Lebanon: Examining the Evidence.  Lamis Jomaa, assistant professor, and Nahla Hwalla, professor, presented during the discussion Enhancing Adherence to Mediterranean Diet: Recommendation and Policy Implications.​

The workshop provided an opportunity for AUB faculty to present evidence from their research reflecting the gradual erosion of the MD in Lebanon, and to propose relevant policy interventions to help reinstate healthier nutrition. Presentations were followed by open panel discussions that engaged all participates in lively interaction.​​
