Dean Rabi Mohtar participated at the World Congress for Education, held virtually November 24-27.
The Congress' objectives were to: 1) approve the basis, foundation, and action plan of the Third Social Contract of Education; 2) strengthen regional and international integration and cooperation for transforming education as a basis for constructing a new society in which no one is left behind; and 3) approve the content and roadmap for the World Education Congress 2021. During a session on Interculturality: Crosscutting axis of the thirds Social Education Contract, Dean Mohtar highlighted AUB's own social contract during the various emergency conditions that Lebanon has witnessed during the last year. This included AUB's responses to the challenges of the uprising (October 2019), the economic crisis, and the Beirut Blast.
The Dean also spoke about the Transforming Higher Education Project, led by AUB in partnership with the Kellogg Foundation, EARTH University, GCHERA and several universities in Mexico and Haiti, describing how this type of partnership is critical for transformation of education and graduating ethical leaders who will positively transform the world. Mohtar closed by reflecting on the potential role of universities in supporting society and stressed the need for different metrics for assessing university standings, student learning, and other success measures.
