On Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Mrs. Sally Sawaya, Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Sciences-Nutrition, defended her dissertation before committee members.
The inter-faculty program represents a joint achievement of the Faculty of Medicine (FM) and the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS). Sally's research work was performed on rats and investigated the combined effect of dietary phosphorus and structured exercise on body composition, energy balance, and protein synthesis initiation. The 7-member committee included: Dr. Omar Obeid, primary advisor/mentor (Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences, FAFS/AUB), Dr. Assaad Eid, co-advisor (Department of Physiology, FM/AUB), Dr. Nadine Darwiche, Committee Chairperson (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, FM/AUB), Dr. Lara Nasreddine (Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences, FAFS/AUB), Dr. Sami Azar (Department of Endocrinology, FM/AUB), Dr. Maya Bassil (Department of Natural Sciences/LAU), and Dr. Bassem Safadi (Department of Surgery/LAU).
Sawaya's final dissertation manuscript was accepted for publication in the British Journal of Nutrition. Moving forward, Dr. Sally Sawaya plans to pursue an academic and research career in Sports Nutrition.
