Among the many episodes that are being organized by the AUB-Annahar COVID-19 Studio, Dr. Rami Zurayk and Dr. Omar Obeid were featured in the 13th episode (May 19), hosted by Dr. Simon Kachar , to discuss “Food Security and Nutritional Immunity" during the pandemic.
Dr. Zurayk explained that food security is a permanent concern for all countries in the Arab region, even those that produce enough food. As for Lebanon, food import is the biggest concern. Zurayk highlighted the importance of focusing on agriculture today as part of a solution, which requires a long-term set of changes, the first of which is to provide abundant water and agricultural lands and change food diets through the consumption of vegetables. Dr. Zurayk made clear that the citizens' role is to improve their diet by focusing more on plant resources, and also on local production as the alternative to what we import with high bills in hard currency.
Dr. Obeid stated that there is no food that can build the body's immunity alone, but a person must eat a variety of meals to ensure coping with illness and defending the body. Dr. Obeid advises people to eat fruits, vegetables, and proteins to increase their immunity so they do not lack any vitamins. Anti-oxidants taken during sickness do not help but hinder the immune system, it only helps before being infected. By catching an infection, taking a supplement can increase the complications from viruses.
