With the funds provided by Dean Mohtar and under
the supervision of Dr. Mustapha Haidar, AREC director, MSFEA Civil student
successfully completed a two-month internship at AREC during summer session
2020. With the support of AREC staff, the student designed, implemented, and
tested the composting plant, which consisted of a compost windrow turner,
screening machine, shredder, and bagging machine.
The plant is expected to
produce up to 250 tons of compost (10,000 bags) each year and will be used as to
showcase and demonstrate the cost-effective conversion of organic materials to
high-quality compost. Students, researchers, and farmers will have opportunities
to participate in the On-Farm composting program, which is expected to help
create community awareness of the environmental, agronomic, and economic
benefits of composting.
