In a global food system that is neither sustainable nor conducive to health, food insecurity coexists with obesity and other nutrition-related metabolic diseases, such as diabetes. Yet local, sustainable solutions deserving investigation exist to help address this unsustainable reality.
Dr. Malek Batal, Canada Research Chair in Social and Environmental Determinants of Inequalities, Department of Nutrition and Health, works in Canada and other locations with Indigenous peoples affected by metabolic diseases after transitioning away from their traditional foods. In an effort to halt malnutrition and related diseases from escalating, Dr. Batal's team investigate and promote solutions based in environmentally, culturally sustainable, local food systems.
The Canada Research Chairs Program invests up to $295 million annually to attract and retain some of the world's most accomplished and promising minds. Chairholders aim to achieve research excellence in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
