As part of the “Mashreq Digital Transformation of the Agricultural Sector" initiative, a meeting co-hosted by FAFS and the World Bank Group (WBG) took place at the WBG premises in Beirut (December 18-19). The initiative, a knowledge-sharing process between three Mashreq countries (Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon), aims at revitalizing the agricultural sector, boosting digital agriculture innovation, and raising the profile of agriculture among non -agricultural policymakers.
Experts from Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon prepared a joint background paper discussed by participants. Partner organizations, academic institutions, and ministries of agriculture in the three countries joined AUB faculty and collaborating partners from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA), and the Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI). An expanded background paper will be presented at a ministerial meeting (early 2020) and at preparatory events for this year's G20 meetings to be held in Saudi Arabia.
