Landscape Design and Ecosystem Management (LDEM) department, an official member of ECLAS, contributed to the ECLAS General Assembly and Heads of School Meeting 2021 (September 13-15) with two presentations from its faculty members. The annual event is organized by the European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools (ECLAS) and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). Dr. Beata Dreksler and Dr. Yaser Abunnasr presented the topic: August 4, 2020 - How can landscape architects contribute to post-disaster recovery? And discussed the work of the landscape architecture students, from the final year capstone project on urban recovery from successive, short and long-term disastrous events, such as the August 4, 2020, Beirut seaport explosion. Their presentation was part of the session Societal Context: Humanitarianism—Catastrophe and Activism, moderated by faculty members from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU).
At the same conference, Mrs. Nayla Al-Akl presented The role of the landscape design in promoting social inclusion, which looks at the extent to which our physical environments can impact social sustainability and influence inclusion/exclusion in the public and private realms. It encourages designers to engage in theoretical debates and policymaking to address these challenges through design and immediate site projects. Al-Akl's talk was part of a session on Societal Context: Participatory planning and design – social inclusion, moderated by faculty members from SLU.
