The challenges we face as a society in Lebanon and other countries, call for a revisiting of the social contract between academic institutions and society. The earlier contract, where we teach skills and prepare students for the workforce should retire. A new social contract that prepares graduates for ethical leadership and involvement in society must emerge. One that ensures graduates take pride and ownership in their and their society wellbeing.
Through its involvement with several academic institutions around the world and in partnership with W. K. Kellogg Foundation, FAFS is coordinating a transformative initiative for higher education based on key elements including community engagement, social entrepreneurship, conflict resolution, ethical leadership and experiential community based learning.
These will be integrated in a capstone experience that we launched this year, working with communities around Lebanon to solve real world problems.
