Dr. Jiri Moravec, Coordinator of the Erasmus Program at the Faculty of the Environment of Jan Evangelista Purkyne University (UJEP) in Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic gave a brief introduction on UJEP's history, faculties, and programs. He discussed the environmental-related topics that can provide opportunities for international cooperation. The session took place in Michel & Sherine Bayoud Lecture Hall, FAFS/Wing A on November 15, 2021.
His colleague, Dr. Karim Al Souki, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Environment at UJEP proceeded to present his research work in the field of agricultural soil pollution, phytoremediation, and Miscanthus x giganteus cultivation. In his presentation, Dr. Al Souki assessed the capacity of miscanthus on improving the functionality of agricultural soils contaminated by single and/or multiple contaminated (trace elements, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), ad diesel). He also discussed the short-term impacts of miscanthus on carbon sequestration and the microbial community structure in low quality agricultural soils upon land-use change from wheat (a C3 crop).
