Message from the Dean: To New Beginnings

Dear FAFS Community,

Year 2021, has been quite a year for FAFS. It has been by far the most difficult year for Lebanon and the community. Yet, FAFS faculty and staff stood their ground and woke up every day to meet the challenges head on and worked to make our World a better place. We have experienced achievements and new challenges over the last 12 months. We have expanded our academic offerings and watched many of our students secure great positions within the industry domain.

Throughout this challenging time, several achievements have been accomplished, the highlight of which is the accreditation of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) program by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the launch of the online Food Security Diploma, and relatively imaintaning our student numbers through intensive recruitment efforts.

FAFS also witnessed an increase in the quality research and publications and secured the total funding of more than 5M USD from external grants during 2020-21. We have also witnessed the successful accomplishments of our faculty members and those of the Laboratories for the Environment, Agriculture and Food (LEAF), the Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) and additional engagement and outreach activities. Furthermore, FAFS continued its efforts towards securing additional student scholarships, funds, and competitive student awards.

Additionally, FAFS is also moving forward on several fronts, such as the consolidation of the Masters in Agriculture into one overarching degree with varied concentrations, the internal review of the NFSC department, the planning for the design of several additional online programs, as well as the synergies with OSB and MSFEA. FAFS is also in the process of submitting several large proposals for funding to be implemented at AREC with a community service component to compliment what we have been working on throughout the past few years.

All of these achievements and activities would not have been possible without the strong support and diligent work of the FAFS community. For this, I wholeheartedly salute you and look forward for a new year where we can all as a community keep our spirits up and continue the hard work.

Once again, thank you, and please accept my best wishes for a happy and brighter new year!

Best Regards,

Ammar
