Nahla Hwalla participated in the first regional meeting of CIHEAM MEDIET Project

​​Dr. Nahla Hwalla, Professor at the Nutrition and Food Sciences Department, participated in the first regional meeting of the CIHEAM MEDIET Project - Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems in the Mediterranean Area on September 30th at the CIHEAM headquarters in Bari, Italy.

The MEDIET project aims to promote the Mediterranean diet (MD) in its different dimensions - nutritional, environmental, economic, and social - by implementing a knowledge-sharing system and strengthening local food systems and diets.

In partnership with 18 countries, the MEDIET project supports governments of the Mediterranean area, increases dialogue and synergies between stakeholders to help create a comprehensive knowledge-based environment, and promotes long-term strategies for sustainable food policies, dietary guidelines, and food safety measures.

Dr. Hwalla presented information on the Lebanese national food basket and the extensive national research on consumption data compared with the MD. Dr. Hwalla also highlighted the availability of some Lebanese food value chains and introduced the current local economic challenges facing the Lebanese people and their ability to adhere to the MD.​
