The Ukraine war’s real impact on food security in the ME and globally by Rami Zurayk

Food Security Program Director at FAFS, Dr. Rami Zurayk, analyzed the many dimensions of food security and insecurity and how the Ukraine war has worsened stresses for many people around the world during AUB's Professors at Work 75th episode on June 26th.

Alongside Ukraine, he mentioned other factors that impact food availability, like climate change, sanctions, the Covid pandemic, local wars, and political economy decisions by predatory or corrupt governments in the north and south alike. Ukraine and Russia have reduced global food trade by just 3-5%, though grain importers like Lebanon and Egypt will suffer disproportionately.

So, what's the solution?

“Enshrine people's right to a healthy diet and promote positive relationships between people and their landscapes, in order to safeguard both", Dr. Zurayk
