  Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

  AUB is accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and includes six faculties: Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Architecture, Agricultural and Food Sciences, Health Sciences, and Business. AUB offers more than 130 programs leading to bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The main language of instruction is English.

Affiliates Program

Academics and PhD candidates may apply for affiliation with ARABIC & NEL in order to facilitate their research in Lebanon.

The required documents are as follows:

Letter or email to the chair of ARABIC & NEL, Professor Bilal Orfali, introducing yourself, requesting the affiliation and mentioning the dates during which you would like to be affiliated with ARABIC & NEL.
For academics, we require a letter of recommendation from the department chair. For students, we require a letter of recommendation from the advisor.

An affiliation with ARABIC & NEL provides the following:

Library access (fees and conditions)
Internet access and WI-fi on AUB campus (free)
AUB visitors ID card ($7)

The following conditions apply:

ARABIC & NEL offers affiliation for a period of one year only with possible renewal for an additional year under certain conditions.
Affiliates for terms longer than three months may be asked to give a presentation about their research.
ARABIC & NEL cannot help affiliates obtain a residency permit in Lebanon.
ARABIC & NEL cannot provide any office space to affiliates.
Affiliation requests may take up to three weeks to process so applicants should take this timeframe into consideration when applying.
