The AUB Math Summer Camp, organized by the Department of Mathematics, targets high school students in grade 11 and 12.
Morning sessions will be dedicated to reviewing and learning basic concepts in Mathematics. In the afternoon, after a common lunch, students will explore the significance of mathematics in day-to-day technologies: credits cards, artificial intelligence, board/video gaming, crime solving, GPS, big data, imaging, pandemics, medicine.
Through classes, solving sessions, and fun activities the camp aims to provide the students with the opportunity to catch up and to strengthen their mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
Start date: Monday July 1, 2024
End date: Thursday July 11, 2024 (option 1) or Thursday July 18, 2024 (option 2)
Fees: 400$ (option 1) or 500$ (option 2).
Contact: Dr. Florian Bertrand and Dr. Ahmad Sabra
The full program runs for three weeks (option 2), 4 days a week, 9:30am-4pm. Students can opt to attend the first two weeks only (option 1).
The mornings sessions consist of 5 modules:
Module 1: Functions (Week 1)
Equation of a line, polynomial and trigonometric functions, composition and inverse functions, exponential and logarithm.
Module 2: Limits and Continuity (Week 1)
Limits, continuous functions, sided limits, limits at infinity, asymptotes.
Module 3: Differentiability (Week 2)
Derivative, grahical interpretation, tangent line, derivative of standard functions, derivatives of product and quotient, chain rule, table of variations, L’Hospital rule.
Module 4: Geometry (Week 2)
x, y, z coordinates, line and plane equations, dot product and orthogonality, cross Product and colinearity.
Module 5: Integration (Week 3)
Mathematical induction, area below x2, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, integration by parts, substitution method, partial fraction, improper integrals.
Afternoon sessions are centered around 4 topics:
Topic 1: Data
Machine Learning, Data Science, AI, crime solving, credit cards and Cryptography
Topic 2: Gaming
The Mathematics behind card games, chess, video gaming, sports
Topic 3: Biomedical
Diseases, CoVid, Imaging
Topic 4: Research
Students will be introcduced to modest mathematical problems in the form of riddles and will work in teams. Students will have the opportunity to interact with researchers but also undergraduate students taking part in our Summer Research Camp.
The camp will be followed by a ceremony on Friday Juy 19, 2024, where students will receive certificates of completion.
