Honorary Doctoral Degree from the National University of San Marcos granted to Professor Sari Hanafi

Dr. Sari Hanafi, professor at the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Media Studies at the American University in Beirut (AUB), was recently awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Peru.

Established in 1551, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, is the first officially established and the longest continuously operating university in the Americas and the only university in Peru with a Nobel Prize laureate among its alumni.

“I am so happy that I was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the leading university in Peru" said Dr. Hanafi. “I dedicate this degree to my student activists in the current Lebanese uprising who are defending their rights to live decently and to Palestinians who are struggling for their freedom and their socio-economic rights" Hanafi added.

This recognition, as announced by the University of San Marcos, was based on Dr. Hanafi's theoretical contributions to a global sociology, serving the scientific community worldwide and connecting the Arab world with Latin America through scholarships.

Sari Hanafi is currently a professor of sociology at AUB and editor of Idafat: the Arab Journal of Sociology. He is president of the International Sociological Association (2018-2022) and previously its vice president and member of its executive committee (2010-2018).
