Launched in Spring 2016, the initiative for Women & Gender Studies at AUB is committed to further the University's liberal arts education by foregrounding gender as a site of intellectual inquiry, critical thinking, and creative exploration. Through a variety of courses and a newly-established Minor in Women & Gender Studies, students explore how different academic fields and disciplines view the operation of gender in the labor market, social movements, the family, healthcare, political systems, and cultural productions and representations.
The WGS initiative at AUB is envisioned as a stepping-stone towards the establishment of an interdisciplinary program that fosters teaching, research, and public programming on gender. This year, the Initiative focused on building and fostering alliances and collaborations with students, faculty members, departments, institutes, and projects within AUB as well as community partners around 3 axes: Research, Pedagogy, and Community Outreach. This collaborative ethos helped us acquire more visibility, allowing FAS to position itself as a leading faculty on gender.
The WGS initiative is currently supported by a Mellon Foundation grant to AUB.
