The GECI-PH Network was established in February 2018 at the conclusion of a workshop held in Beirut on 'Governance, ethics, and conflict of interest in the interaction between corporations and public health research, practice, and policy'. The Network is currently supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) which is a Canadian federal Crown corporation that funds research in developing countries to promote growth, reduce poverty, and drive large-scale positive change and supports leading thinkers who advance knowledge and solve practical development problems.
The Governance, Ethics & Conflicts of Interest in Public Health (GECI-PH) Network includes academic institutions and civil society organizations concerned about private sector influence on public health research, practice, and policy outcomes. The Network was created in response to the rise of public-private partnerships as a model of 'good governance' in the absence of sufficient attention being given to examining the benefits and challenges of engaging with private sector actors. The Network aims to promote institutional safeguards and measures that protect public health goals in research, professional practice, and policy-making.
