Italian Senate, Rome, November 18, 2021-The Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) report 'Health and the Environment in Arab Countries' received the prestigious award of the Parliamentarian Assembly for the Mediterranean (PAM). The report was jointly produced by AFED and the Department of Environmental Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) and was launched at the AFED 13th Annual Conference. It was edited by Mr. Najib Saab (AFED) and Professor Rima R. Habib (FHS, AUB).
The report highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the region's weak healthcare systems and countries' limited capacity to cope with emergent health crises. It has also made clear that the health of a nation cannot be sustained by only targeting groups that can afford to pay for healthcare services, pointing out that “health for all", as stressed on in SDG 3, is a necessity.
