In Loving Memory of Professor Makhlouf Haddadin

On Oct 6, 2022 AUB celebrated late Professor Makhlouf Haddadin 57 years of outstanding research and teaching, distinguished lifetime service and legacy at AUB, and bestowed upon him posthumously the University Medal, one of AUB's highest honors. Many of us, faculty and students, have been mentored by Dr. Haddadin and all of us have crossed path with him. His leadership at the helm serving as the Acting Dean of the  Faculty of Health Sciences from 1994 until 998, during very difficult period and uncertain times, attest to his wise and assured guidance.

Ms. Mona Katul, FHS executive officer, who got the chance to closely work with Professor Haddadin remembers, “Professor Haddadin was a true gentleman. His presence emanated a unique energy—firm yet kind. He was a cultured, interesting man, and a staunch supporter of AUB.  When he came to the Dean's Office, we would be sure to hear him recite a verse of poetry appropriate to the situation, or talk about a certain period in history (mostly of the Arabs), or share an anecdote from his youth. He was proud of his lineage. Despite all his accomplishments, Professor Haddadin was a modest man who valued those who worked with him". Dean Abla Sibai, who was appointed as Assistant Professor with him serving as FHS Dean and has been mentored by him, notes “Professor Haddadin had a very sharp memory, and could recall by name generations of students whom he had taught and currently hold important positions in academia and industries; he was a skilled administrator, firm yet modest and humble. Professor Haddadin, at the age of 87, was still teaching. His energy, wit and wisdom until the very last day are all very inspiring for successful aging".

Each journey must come to an end, except the journeys of those who have spent their lives in the service of others. Professor Haddadin may be gone, but his spirit will always be there at AUB and FHS through all those who were touched by his wisdom.
