A study led by Dr. Rima Nakkash from the Faculty of Health sciences at AUB claimed the second place award following a call for proposal led by The International Journal of Public Health (IJPH) under a special issue on “market-driven forces and public health".
Seventeen articles and editorials were submitted to this issue, with the study entitled “Attitudes and practices of public health academics towards research funding from for-profit organizations: cross-sectional survey" voted in second place by IJPH editors and registered participants of the Latin American Public Health Meeting.
The study aims to explore the growing trend of for-profit organization (FPO)-funded university research, which is becoming a concerning trend with the potential conflicts of interest that might lead to biases in methods, results, and interpretation. The study investigates on how, for public health academic programs and researchers, receiving funds from FPOs whose products have negative health implications may be particularly problematic.
