Dr. Faysal El-Kak, obstetrician and gynecologist, public health practitioner, researcher, advocate in women health, and senior lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) in the American University of Beirut (AUB) was elected as Vice President of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).
Dr. El Kak is the first physician from Lebanon and the Arab region to be elected for this position. A total of six candidates representing India, Italy, Kenya, the Netherlands, and South Korea, along with Lebanon were part of these elections.
“It's a great honor for me to be elected as Vice President in the board of directors of this great organization," stated Dr. El Kak. “I hope that through this new role, and at this sensitive time, I will be able to contribute even further towards promoting women's rights, sexual and reproductive health, and eventually the wellbeing of the whole society." “As always, and as per my previous roles, I pledge to put all my efforts and knowledge to help advance FIGO's agenda in supporting women's health and rights, particularly refugees and underprivileged, from Lebanon and everywhere on the globe" he added.
“My main slogan was to bring diversity, universality, and unity to this organization. These goals are essential for the progress and development of FIGO, enhancing its outreach and impact, and for the further expansion of its mandate."
The elections took place during the FIGO World Congress 2018 in the city of Rio Di Janeiro, Brazil, bringing together around 13,000 gynecologists and oncologists from all over the world.
In addition to his prosperous academic and professional career as a Senior Lecturer of Health Behavior and Sexuality & Public Health, FHS, AUB, and a Clinical Associate, Women's Health Center, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), Dr. El Kak occupies several positions that qualify him to be among the most active physician in his field in the Arab region. These positions include:
- The president of the Federation of Arab Gynecology Obstetric Societies (FAGOs)
- The Chair of the Middle East Sexual Health Committee of the World Association of Sexual Health
- Member in a number of FIGO committees
- Member of the AUB4REFUGEES initiative on Health of Women Refugees
- Coordinator of the Network of Arab Scholars on Sexuality and Sexual Health (NASSS)
- Coordinator of the National Committee on Safe Motherhood- Lebanon
- Member in the Global Advisory Board on Sexual Health and Wellbeing (GAB)
- Co- Principal investigator of the “Youth Sexual & Reproductive Health Project" (FHS)
Author of many articles and chapters on maternal, reproductive and sexual health issues, as well as several editorials in local media.
FIGO is a professional organization that brings together obstetrical and gynecological associations from 130 member states. It establishes strong and official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and a consultative status with the United Nations (UN), with a focus on women health rights, particularly achieving the highest possible standards of physical, mental, reproductive and sexual health and wellbeing throughout their lives.
The organization pursues its mission through leading global program activities, training and capacity building initiatives, and advocacy on a global stage, especially in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pertaining to reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and non-communicable diseases (SDG3) and gender based violence (SDG5).
