This paper analyzes the levels of maternal mortality in Lebanon for a period of 8 years through a comparison between the Lebanese and the Syrian refugee populations. The paper addresses the higher levels of maternal deaths among the Syrian refugee population in Lebanon, the differences in underlying causes and timing of death, and call for reforms in the organization, coverage and access of maternal health care in conflict settings.
The paper used data from the national notification system at the Ministry of Public Health in Lebanon, which compiles data received through more than 140 Vital Data Observatory focal persons based in public and private hospitals around the country reporting on maternal deaths on monthly basis through an online application system. UNFPA Lebanon has been instrumental in supporting the documentation and reporting of the maternal mortality cases in Lebanon.
