It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our first Middle East Lung Cancer Conference to be held on June 21-22, 2019 in Beirut. You might wonder, why are we holding another conference and why in the Middle East. Two reasons, our understanding of lung cancer pathophysiology and genetic mechanisms and our therapeutic options are growing so rapidly that it is hard to keep pace with these updates. Second, our area has specific peculiarities that warrant a dedicated conference to address our regional needs. Smoking rates remain high and, unfortunately, are on the rise in our region. This includes not only cigarettes, but also Narjileh and other tobacco products. At the same time, tobacco control measures are either absent or not implemented. We feel there are many pressing issues that need to be addressed in our region.
We have structured a wonderful scientific program that spans the areas of tobacco control, smoking cessaion, patient experiences, early detection, as well as the most up to date therapeutic advances. The list of speakers includes a wealth of expertise both locally and internationally.
We look forward to having you in our conference and we are excited to have you.
