The Division of Cardiology at the American University of Beirut Medical Center provides comprehensive care to a wide spectrum of patients with cardiovascular diseases in Lebanon and the Middle East. The division is also part of the Heart & Vascular center and actively collaborates with the Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgery divisions on multiple academic and clinical initiatives. Full time faculty with advanced training and board certification along with a dedicated team of nursing specialists, technicians and staff cover our clinical services which include:
- Coronary Care Unit
- Consult Service
- Heart failure service with a dedicated heart failure unit
- Cardiac catheterization and interventional cardiology
- Clinical electrophysiology
- Echocardiography (transthoracic, transesophageal, stress, and 3D)
- Cardiac imaging (Nuclear, CT, MRI)
In addition to the basic clinical services, the division provides advanced and highly specialized services that include: Structural heart interventions (TAVI, Mitral Clip, ASD and para-valvular leak closure), rotablation, atrial fibrillation ablation, left atrial closure devices, LVAD , ECMO, and intra-procedural transesophageal and 3D echocardiography to guide structural heart interventions.
The division is also committed to excellence in education and research as part of the academic mission of the faculty of medicine. Our medical education program covers basic coursework in cardiology for medical students, clinical training for house staff in the coronary care unit and consult services, and rigorous hands on training for fellows in all aspects of clinical cardiology along with a structured curriculum of core lectures, journal clubs, case discussions, and grand rounds. Research efforts have spanned a wide range of clinical areas: Acute coronary syndromes, arrhythmias, heart failure, primary prevention and outcomes research.
