Nephrology Hypertension Laboratory

​The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension is an academic division of the Department of Internal Medicine at the American University of Beirut-Medical Center. Its faculty members have been providing comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care for patients with renal disease and/or hypertension, in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. 

Physicians Qualifications

The faculty members are highly qualified and recognized nephrologists with rich and long cumulative experience in all aspects of nephrology and hypertension. They have had excellent recognized training and strong academic pedigrees/portfolios. They collectively maintain strong US and European as well as other local and regional institutional and organizational connections. They oversee the medical and academic activities following the highest standards of practice.

Trusted referral Center

The Division is a trusted referral center for Lebanon and the region that provides a wide range of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services. For instance, the array of comprehensive clinical care services include in addition to Hemodialysis (HD), Peritoneal Dialysis (PD), Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), pre- and post-transplantation renal care (kidney, liver, bone marrow), CT-and US-guided renal biopsy, essential/complex and secondary hypertension, consultative nephrology, glomerular diseases, diabetic renal disease, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its complications, onco-nephrology and other special conditions. Electron Microscopy evaluation for renal biopsies is offered through a clinical service agreement with Yale University in New Haven, CT, USA. 

Training 

The Division is actively engaged in providing training for renal care and dialysis for nurses and nephrologists from the region. ​

The Nephrology and Hypertension Laboratory is an entity within the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. Since its foundation, the laboratory has evolved to become one of the leading diagnostic nephrology and hypertension service in Lebanon. It is dedicated to the consistent provision of high quality care in the most efficient and professional manner. The Laboratory was the first to introduce ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, evaluation of arterial and arteriolar function (compliance, systemic vascular resistance), and evaluation of arterial and arteriolar function (Determination of microalbuminuria) Determination of cyclosporine levels for management of patients with renal transplantation.

Working Hours & Location

The Nephrology Hypertension Laboratory is open all weekdays, Monday through Friday from 8:00am till 5:00 pm. 

The Nephrology Hypertension Laboratory is located on the sixth floor in ACC building. Room 6037.

Services

The laboratory provides consultative and follow up care for patients with all types of nephrology and hypertension diseases. In addition, the laboratory strives to be one of the leading services for training specialists in the field of Nephrology and hypertension diseases for both academic careers and clinical practice.

Procedures

  • Evaluation of arterial and arteriolar function ( arterial compliance , systemic vascular resistance) by non-invasive tonometric approaches( sphygmocardiography, pulse wave velocity,  and HDI- Cardiovascular Profiling)
  • Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
  • Evaluation of Baroreceptor  Function (Barocor)
  • Phlebotomy services for patients who require renin and aldosterone testing​
