The Faculty of Medicine is subject to the regulations of the Board of Regents of the State of New York under which the University is chartered.
The Faculty of Medicine was granted full accreditation effective January 1, 2019, and for a period of six years by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Medical Education Programs (TEPDAD) International Medical Education Accreditation Council, the authorized medical school accrediting body of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) based in Turkey. This accreditation places FM in compliance with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates requirement.
The entrance requirements and the program leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine are similar to those of medical schools in the United States. The course of study covers a period of four years. Graduates are qualified for the licensing examination in Lebanon upon completion of the four-year program.
The curriculum is based on the pattern which is followed by most American medical colleges with the necessary modifications and appropriate emphasis which make it conform to the local and regional needs in the fields of medical education and health care. Thus the program is built on a solid infrastructure of the basic medical sciences for which 2 academic years are devoted (pre-clerkship years). Although, in this regard, the basic concepts of the various components of the basic sciences are the main focus of attention, sufficient emphasis is placed on current developments, on the experimental background of these developments, as well as on laboratory exercises, to lay the grounds for selected students to pursue a career in the basic medical sciences or in academic clinical medicine. These are destined to become the teachers of the future. During these two years, there is sufficient integration of the clinical sciences (knowledge and skills) with the basic science content, providing relevance and equipping students with the basic skills to transition to the thrid year effortlessly.
The clinical clerkship component of the program, which covers a span of two years, while broad in coverage, focuses in depth on medical problems which are of specific concern in Lebanon and the region.
The graduate of the program, therefore, will possess sufficient background in the basic sciences and the clinical disciplines to pursue a variety of graduate programs, basic or clinical.
In pursuing these educational objectives the Faculty strives to maintain an academic program of high quality and to help its students to acquire appropriate professional and personal qualities commensurate with the requirements of the profession. Thus, standards are maintained by observing strict regulations regarding admission, advancement and graduation. In addition, a highly selected and qualified faculty with appropriate distribution amongst the various disciplines is maintained and ample opportunity for faculty development is provided. Furthermore, the Faculty provides for the necessary supporting facilities including classrooms, laboratories, a library, a hospital, outpatient department and a family medicine practice center. Proper professional and personal attributes are nurtured by promoting self-reliance, self-education, critical thinking, team-work and awareness of the psychic, social, public health and economic aspects of disease in relation to the patient, the family and the community.
