  Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut is a teaching-centered research university based on the American liberal arts model of higher education. AUB has over 8,000 students and 800 faculty members. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, lifelong learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

  AUB is accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and includes six faculties: Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Architecture, Agricultural and Food Sciences, Health Sciences, and Business. AUB offers more than 130 programs leading to bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The main language of instruction is English.

Objectives of Medical Education

The purpose of the Faculty of Medicine of the American University of Beirut is to educate qualified students so that they may practice competently, teach or perform research and contribute to the advancement of community health.

It is the special obligation of the Faculty to provide the highest quality of medical education possible within the resources available and to develop physicians who are willing and able to cope with the health needs of the region which the University is dedicated to serve.

Recognizing the need to be selective in its efforts, the Faculty of Medicine elects to concentrate on the thorough preparation of a number of physicians and on the establishment of exemplary standards in service, teaching and research.

In order to achieve its objectives, the Faculty is guided by the following general precepts:

Goals of the Impact Curriculum

To graduate physicians highly competent in the art and science of medicine
To instill in students the values of ethicality, humanitarianism, professionalism, advocacy, social responsibility, and accountability
To nurture a collegial environment that supports the personal growth and development, leadership skills, and career paths of students
To provide students with the opportunity for engaging in scholarly work
To employ state-of-the-art educational and patient care approaches and facilities

Specific Competencies of the Medical Program

By the end of their training students must demonstrate competency in several domains of medical education. A detailed list of the specific competencies expected at the end of the program has been developed and is continuously revised. These competencies are taught and evaluated at different levels within the courses and clerkships of the medical program.
