Mission
The primary goal of the division of general surgery is to support the mission of the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the American University of Beirut. The Division of General Surgery has a long standing tradition of excellence in patient care, education and research in Lebanon and across the region in the Middle East, it strives to:
- Provide the highest quality patient care across all general surgical subspecialties
- Provide the best quality of undergraduate medical education
- Deliver superior academic and clinical training to graduate surgeons who are competent in all aspects of modern surgery
- Promote the academic and personal development of the faculty by supporting professional growth, medical education, and research
Structure
The division, currently headed by Dr. Mohamad Khalife, includes a total of 14 faculty members who cover the wide spectrum of general surgical procedures for both adult and pediatric patients, and is the mainstay of the residency training program and curricular teaching.
The General Surgery residency program is accredited by the ACGME-I. This accreditation provides recognition by a respected international body that the General Surgery Residency Program is on par with training programs in the United States. It also ensures that the residents are meeting international standards throughout their training. As of 2012, graduates of the program became eligible to sit for the European Board of General Surgery.
The General Surgery Residency Program graduates 3 residents per year and provides outstanding technical and academic training over the course of 5 years.
The division offers the following fellowships:
- A two-year Trauma and Surgical Critical Care fellowship program
- A one-year Surgical Critical Care fellowship program
- A two-year Complex General Surgery Oncology fellowship program
