Founded in 1997, the Calcium Metabolism and Osteoporosis Program is the first of its kind nationally and regionally as a center of expertise for metabolic bone disorders. Its mission is to promote excellence in clinical care, research and education in disorders of calcium and bone metabolism.
The Program's outstanding achievements in all three endeavors led to the coveted designation by the World Health Organization as a “WHO Collaborating Center (WHO-CC) for Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disorders” in 2010 and the redesignation in 2014.
The Calcium Metabolism and Osteoporosis Program Bone Densitometry Unit at AUBMC is the only center in Lebanon and the region in which both faculty and technicians are certified by the ISCD since 2007, and continuously recertified since. It abides by the most rigorous quality assurance standards and provides over 3,000 bone density scans per year for clinical and research purposes. The unit has initiated the process to secure ISCD “facility accreditation.” If successful, it would be the first accredited BMD unit outside the United States.
