“Medicine is the most humane of the sciences, the most empiric of arts, and the most scientific of humanities. (…)
Humanistic medicine exists when the science, technology, and craftsmanship of the physician are practiced with the deepest respect for the humanity of the patient. This means that everything is modulated by those values we call human: the freedom to make informed decisions, preservation of dignity, absence of humiliation, and the responsible use of power. If the medicine is indeed the science particularized in a unique way in the clinical situation, then it must, by definition, be humanistic. Otherwise, it is not a medicine at all, but some conglomerate of techniques, craftsmanship, [or] science”.
Edmund Pellegrino,
Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Medical Ethics

challenges, stating, “In a culture that glorifies winning and celebrates achievement, we often concentrate on the
destination, and overlook the journey. The past has taught me that, especially in times of crisis, we should do it
the other way around. We should follow our moral compass, knowing that we do not control the winds that face
us. If, against all odds, we reach the intended destination, we should be grateful. If, however, we do not, then we
should not despair. It is ok. We have done our best in a good cause, and that is more than many can say”.
Interim Dean Dr. Ghazi Zaatari congratulated the winners of the awards and expressed his support and recognition
of SHBPP’s work, for “championing and carrying the baton of professionalism” in the faculty of Medicine, and
