NORD Partners in Saida Health Day to Promote Community Health

The Nutrition, Obesity and Related Diseases (NORD) program at the Global Health Institute (GHI) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) took part in Saida Health Day on Sunday, September 24, 2017 to promote health among the citizens of the city.

The health day was held in Khan El Franj, a touristic venue renowned for its strategic location at the heart of the old souks of Saida city. The location also serves as a focal point of attraction of the disadvantaged residents of the old souks. The event was organized by the AUB-based non-governmental organization “Amalouna,” in partnership with GHI among others.
The health day covered a wide range of health promotion and disease screening activities with a focus on non-communicable diseases and associated risk factors.
The NORD team led the booth on healthy diet, conducting accordingly a set of nutrition assessment and education activities targeting more than 1,000 visitors of different age groups and socio-economic status. Visitors were also advised on lifestyle habits that are scientifically known to reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer.

NORD’s participation in this day comes in line with the series of activities organized by the program in recognition of the obesity prevention month, which will be concluded by a Symposium on “Preventing Obesity in the Middle East and North Africa Region”. The Symposium will be held on October 11th, 2017 at AUB.
