Position: Consultant for a period of four weeks to work within the Climate Change and Environment Program (CC&E) at the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI). The consultant is expected to perform well-defined activities under the project titled “Nexus-driven open labs for competitive and inclusive growth in the Mediterranean” (NEX-LABS), funded by ENI-CBCMED program, European Union.
About the Climate Change and Environment Program
The Climate Change and Environment program (CC&E) was launched in 2008 as part of the Issam Fares Institute's (IFI) strategy of utilizing the American University of Beirut’s (AUB) significant research and analytical capabilities to inform and guide public policy-making in the Arab world. The program is currently implementing multiple projects on climate change and water governance, climate change and conflict, water-energy- and food security nexus, climate change and cities among others.
About NEX-LABS Project
NEX-LABS aims to support the implementation of clean technologies for sustainable and resilient increase of agro-food sector production, based on a more efficient use of energy (renewable/solar solutions) and water (wastewater treatment, water harvesting or reuse solutions). The project targets Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPC) region thanks to the contributions of ICT such as block-chain technology, Internet or the Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and Big Data.
NEX-LABS contributes to the creation of a sustainable and resilient agro-food sector based on NEXUS driven Open Living Labs (NDOLL) approach, hence strengthening technology transfer, cooperation of industry-academia, increasing commercialisation opportunities and innovation-driven growth.
The main objective of Output 4.1 of NEX-LABS is to conduct capacity building for different stakeholder groups involved in Water-Energy-Food Nexus and equip them with technical and strategic thinking skills needed to integrate WEF Nexus challenges and opportunities in their business model and policy frameworks. This activity will grow the community of WEF Nexus experts and practitioners, foster collaboration between private, public sectors and academia and improve community awareness on the region’s WEF Nexus needs.
In this context, NEX-LABS will conduct three regional tailored trainings for public authorities, SMEs and technology transfers officers from four Mediterranean countries including Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia and Egypt to support them in increasing their knowledge and best practices to address WEF Nexus challenges in the region using an open innovation approach.
- Principal Responsibilities
The Consultant will cover the following activities and deliverables related to Output 4.1:
Assist in preparing the training program’s concept notes, scope, and timeline.
Prepare trainings programs of each module (five modules; please refer to Annex 1 for a detailed description of the modules), defined by IFI, with concept notes, agendas, and PowerPoint presentations as well as training reports with the evaluation of its outcomes from the beneficiaries.
Collaborate in the supervision of the organisation of the training modules based on the agreed training program to build the capacities of the targeted beneficiaries.
Education: University degree (Master or equivalent; PhD is a plus) relevant to Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus, sustainable development, and capacity building.
Work Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience in the field of Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus, climate change, sustainable development, and development and governance.
Languages: Excellent command of English and Arabic spoken and written. French is a plus.
Other Skills: Experience in on-line instruction, good analytical, appraisal and planning skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required.
