When working from home, it is important to take the following security measures:
- Create a cyber secure home. Refer to SANS for all measures to be taken.
- Make your connection secure by:
- Avoiding the use of public WIFI
- Updating the software of your home routers
- Protecting the software with a complex password and the strongest encryption of WPA3. WPA3 is the most recent version of the Wi-Fi Protected Access program, which is a security certification program developed to secure wireless computer networks.
- Keep your software up to date. It will improve the security of your device.
- Check out your antivirus program. Make sure it is running and reading the latest updates.
- Make sure your One Drive is up to date. Back up all your work-related material.
- Choose unique passwords. Choose a different and complex password for each of your accounts (Office 365, AUB SIS, Facebook, Instagram to name a few)
- Avoid using USB drives. It is advisable to avoid using USB drives as they can be a source of malware.
- Keep personal and business USB drives separate. Do not use personal USB drives on computers owned by your organization (AUB), and do not plug USB drives containing corporate information (from AUB) into your personal computer. Refer to the Department of Homeland Security for more information: https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/tips/ST08-001
- Own your work device. Your work device should be used solely for work purposes. Do not allow access to the device for family members, friends, or guests.
- Set auto-logout. Make sure you logout when you walk away from your device.
- Think before you click. With the spreading fear of COVID-19, there might be an increase in cyberattacks using this fear. Beware of emails impersonating AUB staff or pretending to be from legitimate organizations claiming to hold critical information/advice regarding the virus. Again, think and check out the sender before you click.
