The Munib and Angela Masri Institute of Energy and Natural Resources at AUB hosted a seminar titled "Innovation in Thermodynamic Systems: How a Systemic Approach Creates Opportunities" by Professor Assaad Zoughaib on Wednesday October 22, 2025 at 12:00 pm Beirut time. The talk was followed by a Q & A.
Assaad Zoughaib is a professor at Mines Paris – PSL University, specializing in systemic and multi-scale methodologies in thermodynamics. His research integrates energy, mass, and exergy analyses across different scales—from component to industrial system—to optimize global efficiency. He develops thermodynamic models coupling physics-based and data-driven approaches for real industrial processes. Zoughaib’s work bridges detailed component behavior with systemic energy integration strategies. He applies these methods to refrigeration, heat pumps, and industrial process optimization. His systemic approach enables cross-scale innovation, linking microscopic phenomena to macroscopic energy performance. He actively collaborates with industry to translate research into practical, low-carbon solutions. Zoughaib holds several patents, including one for membrane-based heat and mass exchangers, applying his multi-scale insights to new technologies. He co-founded STEM, a Mines Paris spin-off, to industrialize these thermal innovations. Through this dual research–innovation path, he advances sustainable energy systems rooted in systemic thermodynamic design.
