Multiple Tenure-Track Faculty Positions – Industrial Engineering & Management

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for multiple tenure-track positions as part of the expansion plans of the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering & Architecture (MSFEA).

Applicants from all research areas related to industrial engineering and engineering management will be considered.   Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in industrial engineering or a closely-related field with at least one degree in engineering by the date of appointment. Preferred research areas include human factors engineering, project management, data science, healthcare, manufacturing systems, sustainable operations, and the circular economy.  Candidates with teaching experience, industrial or post-doctoral appointments, and a record of grant funding and scholarly publications are particularly encouraged to apply.  Applicants interested in visiting positions are also encouraged.  Applications should include a letter of interest, statements of teaching and research interests, a CV, and the names and contact details of at least three references. The Department is home to more than 7 faculty, 70 master's students, and 220 undergraduate students and is part of MSFEA, a flagship engineering, architecture, and design faculty of the AUB that attracts the most highly sought students from Lebanon and the region. Founded in 1866, the AUB bases its educational philosophy, standards, and practices on the American liberal arts model of higher education. A teaching-centered research university that is ranked among the top 250 universities in the QS World University Rankings, AUB has approximately 700 full-time faculty members and 8000 students from more than 60 countries. Applicants for this position should hold a PhD degree in electrical and computer engineering, computer science, or a closely related field. Candidates with research focus on Software aspects are encouraged to apply. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, Software Architecture, Software Engineering, Software Testing, Cloud Computing, Parallel Computing. Industrial experience is desirable but not necessary.

The successful candidate is expected to teach graduate and undergraduate software-related courses, participate in program development, and be active in research.

Tenure-Track, Open-Rank Position in Urban Design – Department of Architecture & Design

Overview

The Department of Architecture and Design (ArD) in the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut, invites applications to a tenure-track, open-rank position in Urban Design.  

 The department has two undergraduate programs, one in architecture and one in graphic design; and two graduate programs: urban planning and policy, and landscape and urban design (MUPP-MLUD). The department is currently working to establish new graduate programs in architecture, graphic design, and in design studies. The candidate will be mainly affiliated to the MUPP-MLUD graduate programs and expected to contribute regularly to the Architecture program.​

Qualifications & Main Duties

Applicants must have ample research and teaching experience in urban design scholarship and practice, and must demonstrate an ability to integrate such methods and processes in teaching design studios and seminars at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and in graduate thesis advising. They are expected to have a record of design excellence and recognition, and show evidence of a well-established applied research track and/or creative practice in urban design, preferably with grounding in landscape ecology or related fields. They are also expected to advance the research/creative activities of the department and contribute to ongoing curriculum assessment and development. Moreover, they are expected to contribute to support the establishment of new programs. Candidates must have a Master of Urban Design degree or its equivalent.

Overview

The Department of Architecture and Design (ArD) in the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB), invites applications to two tenure-track, open-rank positions in Graphic Design. 

The department has two undergraduate programs, one in architecture and one in graphic design; and two graduate programs: urban planning and policy, and landscape and urban design. The department is currently working to expand its undergraduate offering into other design fields and to establish new graduate programs in architecture, graphic design, and in design studies. While the candidates will be mainly affiliated to the Graphic Design program to which they are expected to contribute regularly, the department has a cross-disciplinary vision and fosters synergies across programs at multiple levels.

Qualifications & Main Duties

Applicants must have ample research and teaching experience in graphic design scholarship and practice and must demonstrate an ability to integrate such methods and processes in teaching design studios, electives, and core design requirements mainly at the undergraduate level. The ability to teach advanced graduate seminars will give the candidates an advantage with the potential to contribute to the projected growth and development of the department. They are expected to have a record of design excellence and recognition and show evidence of a well-established applied research track and/or creative practice in graphic design, preferably grounded in local/regional investigations and/or fields concerned with contemporary issues within the graphic design discipline (material, technological, socio-political…). They are also expected to advance the research/creative activities of the department and contribute to ongoing curricular assessment and development. Candidates must have an MFA in (Graphic) Design or equivalent. Applicants with a professional degree in graphic design and a terminal degree in related fields will also be considered.

Entry to Digital Market Instructor​

Overview

The Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Beirut, Lebanon invites applications for an Instructor Position for the Fall term of 2021-22. The candidate is expected to develop a one-credit asynchronous online course whose aim is to offer students an opportunity to place themselves and their products in the contemporary digital market.
 

Responsibilities

This online course is a part of an online certificate program which is currently under development at MSEA to provide youth in Lebanon and the Arab region with the skills needed for entry-level positions and freelance work in the software industry. The course consists of two parts. The objective of the first part is to help students build their curriculum vitae, portfolios and code repositories for themselves and their projects. The course is supposed to introduce deployment and packaging of artifacts and components on several digital market platforms. It should also shortly discuss alternatives for attracting funding for small to medium level projects through existing platforms. The second part consists of recorded lectures which will be given by volunteer speakers from the industry with success stories. The candidate is expected to develop few asynchronous online lectures related to the first part and coordinate the talks in the second part.
 

Application Requirements

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in computer science or related field. Applicants should have industry experience, expert knowledge in software development, as well as good communication skills.
