Part-Time Faculty Position in Product Design – IDPP​

Overview

The Interdisciplinary Design Practice Program (IDPP) at the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, invites applications for a part-time teaching position in Product Design to begin Fall 2023. This position includes teaching studio and workshop courses and supporting the development of the product-design course offerings.

We are seeking a proficient Product Designer with a diverse professional design experience, who is interested in contributing to a responsive and forward-thinking design education environment to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for co-teaching product design methods, concepts and techniques to our students. The Product Design candidate will provide hands-on principles and tools in product research and design, including ideation, sketching, prototyping, and testing. The candidate will also be responsible for evaluating students’ work and providing constructive feedback to help students improve their skills and designs.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and preparation of engaging and effective course material

  • Assist in the delivery of design courses

  • Deliver hands-on product design concepts and techniques to students

  • Provide hands-on instruction in the creation of products, including sketching, prototyping, and
    testing

  • Evaluate student work and provide constructive individualized feedback and support to students
    as needed

  • Maintain a safe and productive learning environment for students

  • Collaborate with other instructors to ensure the success of the courses

  • Stay up-to-date with developments and trends in product design and education


Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Product Design, Industrial Design, or a related field - Required

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in product design or industrial design - Required

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills - Required

  • Experience in teaching product design concepts and techniques to students of various skill levels is preferred - Desired

Visiting Faculty Position in Engineering Education

Main Duties

Apply for a visiting faculty position in engineering education at all ranks for a one-semester to a one-year term, with the possibility of extension. The successful applicant will develop and experiment with novel student-centered pedagogies to improve learning outcomes in core engineering courses, including redesigning learning spaces to accommodate new approaches. Ideally, applicants will hold a doctorate in engineering, engineering education, or a closely related field, have significant prior experience in curriculum development and design, and have a strong aptitude for teamwork.

Assistant Professor – Department of Mechanical Engineering​

Overview

The Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the American University of Beirut invites applications for faculty positions at the rank of assistant professor or higher in the areas of:

  • Mechanical Design

  • Materials Science/Engineering 

  • Mechatronics with a focus on robotics

Qualifications

Applicants for these positions should hold a PhD degree in mechanical engineering in the areas of: 

  • Mechanical Design: Candidates with research interest in Mechanical Design Theory and Methodology, CAD CAE, Design Optimization are particularly encouraged to apply.

  • Materials Science/Engineering: Candidates with research interests in experimental, analytical, or computational modeling are particularly encouraged to apply.

  • Mechatronics: Candidates with research interests focusing on instrumentation and robotics with applications involving data science, Artificial Intelligence (or Machine Learning or Deep Machine Learning) are particularly encouraged to apply. Postdoctoral and/or industrial experience is desirable but not necessary.


Main Duties

The successful candidate is expected to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the candidate's field, participate in program development, and be active in research.

Full-Time Lab Instructor​ – Electrical &​ Computer Engineering L​abs

Overview

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon invites applications for a laboratory instructor position, starting August 15, 2023. Applicants should possess a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering.


Main Duties

  • Teach hands-on laboratory sessions on daily basis; a lab session duration is 2 to 3 hours.
  • Assess students reports and projects.
  • Update manuals and Moodle page in coordination with the lab manager.
  • Update lab experiments and exam questions.
 

Application Requirements

  • Master's degree in electrical and computer Engineering.
  • Good experience in advanced digital and analog electronics, microcontrollers, signals and systems, DSP, and data acquisition.
  • Basic understanding of sensors and motors.
  • Hands-on experience and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Knowledge of analog and digital CAD tools.
  • Good Communication Skills.
  • Previous teaching experience is a plus.

Visiting Chair – Integrative Design in Engineering &​ Architecture Education

The Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering & Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut invites applications for the Maroun Semaan Visiting Chair in Integrative Design. The Chair will lead a strategic initiative that embeds integrative design practice across our engineering, architecture, and urban design majors. Integrative design is a holistic approach in which teams from various disciplines co-design a product, building, or process collaboratively to attain a superior solution than can be achieved when these disciplines work sequentially or in silos. Integrative design may simultaneously consider both the product and the system that will produce it.

Candidates for this position should have a strong background in integrative design principles and practice. Strong communication and leadership skills are required, and a proven track record of working with students and faculty to develop and implement innovative curricula is essential.

Overview

The Department of Architecture and Design (ArD) in the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA) at the American University of Beirut, invites applications to a tenure-track, open-rank position in Urban Design.  

 The department has two undergraduate programs, one in architecture and one in graphic design; and two graduate programs: urban planning and policy, and landscape and urban design (MUPP-MLUD). The department is currently working to establish new graduate programs in architecture, graphic design, and in design studies. The candidate will be mainly affiliated to the MUPP-MLUD graduate programs and expected to contribute regularly to the Architecture program.​

Qualifications & Main Duties

Applicants must have ample research and teaching experience in urban design scholarship and practice, and must demonstrate an ability to integrate such methods and processes in teaching design studios and seminars at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and in graduate thesis advising. They are expected to have a record of design excellence and recognition, and show evidence of a well-established applied research track and/or creative practice in urban design, preferably with grounding in landscape ecology or related fields. They are also expected to advance the research/creative activities of the department and contribute to ongoing curriculum assessment and development. Moreover, they are expected to contribute to support the establishment of new programs. Candidates must have a Master of Urban Design degree or its equivalent.

The department is currently working to expand its undergraduate offering into other design fields and to establish new graduate programs in architecture, graphic design, and in design studies. While the candidates will be mainly affiliated to the Graphic Design program to which they are expected to contribute regularly, the department has a cross-disciplinary vision and fosters synergies across programs at multiple levels.

Qualifications & Main Duties

Applicants must have ample research and teaching experience in graphic design scholarship and practice and must demonstrate an ability to integrate such methods and processes in teaching design studios, electives, and core design requirements mainly at the undergraduate level. The ability to teach advanced graduate seminars will give the candidates an advantage with the potential to contribute to the projected growth and development of the department. They are expected to have a record of design excellence and recognition and show evidence of a well-established applied research track and/or creative practice in graphic design, preferably grounded in local/regional investigations and/or fields concerned with contemporary issues within the graphic design discipline (material, technological, socio-political…). They are also expected to advance the research/creative activities of the department and contribute to ongoing curricular assessment and development. Candidates must have an MFA in (Graphic) Design or equivalent. Applicants with a professional degree in graphic design and a terminal degree in related fields will also be considered.
