American University of Beirut

Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA)

ACCREDITATION

The BLA program is the only program of its kind in the MENA region and received accreditation in 2021 making it the first accredited program by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB) from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) outside the USA.

The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture Program offers students a professional degree that qualifies them to practice landscape architecture. The program aims to graduate well-rounded intellectuals, critical thinkers, and skilled professional landscape architects who are committed to the advancement of the field and the practice; and who have a sense of responsibility for the built environment and the natural resources. Design is approached as a research-oriented process that is culturally grounded, theoretically informed, and technically advanced so as to enable graduates to become lifelong learners and to take a leading role in the professional practice both in Lebanon and the region.

Program Description

The landscape architecture program comprises a total of 144 credit hours taken over four years, including summers. The curriculum emphasizes teaching and research that highlight issues of sustainability and resilience across arid and semi-arid climates, further distinguishing the program on a regional scale. The program values and promotes civic engagement of students and faculty within and outside its context through coursework, field trips, experiential learning, and internships, helping to prepare its graduates for various career tracks in the profession.
The curriculum is structured as follows:

  1. Two foundation years, first and second, with core requirements in design, ecological science, and technical courses which offer students basic skills and knowledge in landscape architecture and related areas.
  2. Two advanced years, the third and fourth, with core requirements in advanced design, ecological and technical courses, reinforced by distribution electives. The program includes a multi-disciplinary model of landscape architecture teaching, culminating in a two-semester capstone project.
