American University of Beirut

The collaboration between the Palestine Academy for Science and Technology (PALAST) and the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (MSFEA​) at the American University of Beirut (AUB)​ aims to strengthen research partnerships between Palestinian universities and AUB. This initiative provides Palestinian PhD students and faculty members in engineering and applied sciences with access to world-class research facilities, academic mentorship, and opportunities for joint scientific advancement.

Through fully funded research visits to AUB, selected applicants will engage in collaborative projects designed to address regional and global challenges—while fostering long-term academic ties and capacity building across institutions.​

WHO CAN APPLY?

PhD Admissions Track

Application Steps

1. Apply through AUB’s online admissions system
   

2. Your application will be reviewed by the department and circulated to faculty.

3. If a faculty member expresses interest in supervising you, you may be invited for an interview.

4. Once approved, you’ll receive your admission decision.

Benefits

• Full tuition coverage for up to 5 years

• Monthly stipend:
  Year 1: $1,200
  Year 2: $1,300
  Years 3–5: $1,400

• For students outside Lebanon:

  • Housing stipend

  • Travel tickets (start, annual leave, and graduation)

Faculty Research Visit Track

Application Steps

1. Email an Expression of Interest (EOI) to:

   • AUB: Dr. Riad Chedid​
     

   • PALAST: Dr. Mutamed Khatib ​
     

2. Your EOI must include:

   • Names of MSFEA faculty you'd like to work with

   • A 2-page concept note covering:

     • Research goals and background

     • Expected outcomes and impact

     • Required lab or facility use
       

3. You'll meet virtually with AUB faculty to refine the project

4. Submit a finalized concept note and signed Letter of Interest

5. Joint review and selection by MSFEA and PALAST

6. If selected, MSFEA will send an invitation and help arrange travel, housing, and workspace

Benefits

• Visit duration: 1 week to 1 month

• Covered costs:

  • AUB housing

  • Round-trip airfare (Amman–Beirut)

  • Per diem: $53/day

• Maximum grant: $6,000 per visit

• Graduate thesis co-supervision

• Short research engagements

These follow the same application steps as the faculty track. If a short AUB visit is needed (e.g., for a thesis defense), the same funding terms apply.
