Safeguarding and Understanding Archaeological Heritage in
Turkey and Lebanon
Safeguarding Archaeological Assets of Turkey (SARAT) was a 2020 Europa Nostra award-winning, 3-year long project led by the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) in partnership with Koç University Anatolian Civilizations Research Center and the United Kingdom branch of the International Council of Museums and funded by the UK Cultural Protection Fund (CPF). SARAT aimed at increasing knowledge, capacity and awareness for protecting and understanding archaeological heritage in Turkey. The current project SARAA (Safeguarding and Rescuing Archaeological Assets), a partnership between the BIAA and Biladi in Lebanon with the support of CPF, translated and adapted SARAT’s popular certificate program on disaster risk management and emergency preparedness. SARAT was created with the intention of being a replicable model for other countries with similar richness and needs, and SARAA is a product of this vision.
Dr. Gül Pulhan received her BA in History from Bosphorus University (former Robert College in Istanbul), MA in Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology from Istanbul University and MPhil and PhD in Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology from Yale University. Her specialties are Anatolian and Mesopotamian Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Management and Museum Studies. She excavated at many sites in Turkey, and at Tell Leilan in northern Syria. She taught at Bilkent and Bilgi Universities, and was among the founding faculty members of the Department of Archaeology and the History of Art at Koç University and the MA program in Anatolian Civilizations and Cultural Heritage Management where she taught for ten years. Since 2016 she has been affiliated with the British Institute at Ankara in different capacities as a member of the Council of Management, coordinator of the SARAT and SARAA projects and as an Honorary Research Fellow.
